Élan Hair Design has been crowned Scottish Green Champion at a leading business awards ceremony – capping a remarkable few months for the family behind the Inverurie salon.

Élan collected the prestigious title as part of the Green Apple Awards for Scotland. The ceremony – attended by 120 representatives from across the Scottish green business sector ¬– was held at Edinburgh Castle (Monday, September 10).

Lauren Milton, salon co-ordinator at Élan, collected the award on the night. She said: “Winning this award is a remarkable achievement for a small company from the north-east of Scotland. It’s wonderful to be given recognition for our eco-friendly business approach.”

Élan will now travel to the House of Commons to compete against firms from across the UK at the Green Hero Awards. The ceremony takes place in the landmark building on Monday, November 12 (2012).

Owners Lorna and Gordon Milton run Élan Hair Design with their daughters Lanice and Lauren. The business, established more than 40 years ago, has a staff of 14.

Following a £250,000 investment in its West High Street salon, Élan has incorporated a multitude of environmentally-friendly initiatives including photovoltaic panels, an air-source heat pump and carbon-neutral furniture.

Since adopting its new business approach, Élan has received and been nominated for a host of environmental awards. In July, Élan won the Green Award at the HP Smart Business Awards in London.

Élan has been shortlisted for two awards at this year’s Scottish Green Awards – Best Green Small Company and the 20/20 Carbon Reduction Award. The ceremony takes place at the Glasgow Science Centre on Thursday, October 4 (2012) and will be hosted by BBC newsreader Jackie Bird.

Additionally, Elan has been nominated in the green category for the Northern Star Business Awards. The ceremony, organised by the Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, takes place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on Thursday, October 11 (2012).

Élan has also been announced as a finalist in the ICAEW Sustainability Category at the National Business Awards. The awards - run in partnership with mobile phone company Orange – will be held in London on Tuesday, November 13 (2012).
