In response to growing requirements for industry training, Aberdeen-based specialist, the Bilfinger Salamis Skills Centre has had its busiest summer since opening in 2007.

Attendance in July smashed any previous records, with the centre, based at Broadfold Road in the Bridge of Don, welcoming over 970 delegates on 200 courses throughout the month.

Of those 200, 72 were working at heights courses.

The Skills Centre, which this week hosts the Bilfinger Energy Showcase, has grown from strength to strength, initially opening as a staff-only facility to ensure all Bilfinger Salamis UK staff had up to date training, and could have their competency verified.

The centre is now the only site in Aberdeen to offer OPITO-approved painting and blasting courses, and also offers confined space training, offshore s-cape systems training, and the popular working at height courses, amongst others.

Skills Centre manager Wendy Stephan said she is delighted that the Skills Centre is breaking its own records.

“When we opened, we had just one client – ourselves – and today we have 96 companies coming to us to ensure their staff are trained to the highest level.

“We continue to break targets, with 70% of our business now coming from external clients. We also receive a large number of self-sponsor clients who are looking to enter the industry, or learn a new skill.

“We’ve increased our staff levels to respond to demand, with five trainers now working full-time.

“We are proud to be industry leaders in specialist training, and these results just show how much focus the energy industry now puts on having competent, safe, and skilled workers.”
