Published this weekend, the 17th annual Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 league table ranks Britain’s private companies with the fastest-growing profits over three years.

The eight companies headquartered in Scotland (compared to 11 last year) include three new entrants to the league table.

Together they employ 15,500 staff and have achieved combined profits of £223m.

Topping the group with an annual profit growth of 125% over 3 years is Aberdeen base Balmoral Group

Also among the new entrants is Aberdeenshire-based BrewDog. The craft beer maker exports to more than 50 countries and in February launched an £18m crowdfunding appeal in America to finance a brewhouse and network of brewpubs across the country. Under the leadership of founders James Watt and Martin Dickie, both 33, profits have grown by an average of 120% a year to £6m in 2015.

Featuring for the fourth time is Sterling-based Robertson. The infrastructure and construction group has worked for many of Scotland’s distillers and in 2014 landed the £100m development of the new Macallan distillery and visitor centre for The Edrington Group. Under founder and executive chairman Bill Robertson, 70, profits grew by an average of 60% a year to £12m in 2015.

The companies in Scotland appear with businesses from around the UK, including domestic appliance manufacturer Gtech, online bookmaker bet365, sushi bar chain Wasabi and toy retailer The Entertainer. More than a quarter of the companies (29) are involved in construction and housebuilding, up from 15 in the previous year. They include The Miller Group and Robertson.

The league table and awards programme is sponsored by BDO and UBS Wealth Management, and is compiled by Fast Track, the Oxford-based research and networking events firm.

Martin Gill, partner and head of Scotland at BDO, the title sponsor of the league table, commented:

“Medium-sized businesses in the UK are thriving, creating one in four jobs and responsible for one third of the country’s total revenue. They are seizing the opportunities a recovering economy presents and the most profitable have remained focused on sustainable growth through investment in innovation, diversification and overseas expansion.”
