Scotland’s first university sales battle sees four crowned

Four university students, including three from Edinburgh Napier and one from Abertay, have been crowned the country’s top sellers in the first ever Scottish Universities Sales Challenge (SUSC 2016).

Andrew Dailly, who studies at Edinburgh Napier, came top in the Speed Sell Competition while Paul Kahle and Razan Monshi, also of Edinburgh Napier, and Claire Monribot of Abertay, took the top spots for Sales Role Play after beating off stiff competition from their university counterparts.

They were each awarded certificates after joining eight others from Edinburgh Napier, Abertay and Dundee universities to go head to head for the coveted sales titles at the Edinburgh event, which was the first of its kind to be held in Scotland.

The students, who are studying an element of sales as part of their degree, took part in the pilot sales competition, hosted by Edinburgh Napier University and designed to replicate – on a smaller scale – the fierce and formidable sales contests regularly held in Europe and the US.

The competition was sponsored by Edinburgh recruitment consultancy Edgar Stewart, which recruits for a number of sales roles on behalf of its clients, such as those in professional services, water and energy, and start-ups and SMEs.

The students took part in two Sales Role Play challenges and a Speed Sell Competition, where judges from Edgar Stewart (Bruce Hydes and Craig Jackson); iMultiply Resourcing (Kirsty MacKenzie), Tom McDonald (Exsel Group) and FEAL Development (Frank Martin) joined Edinburgh Napier, Abertay and Dundee University staff.

One of the students said: “The Speed Sell was great! Amazing to speak to so many people in such a short space of time.”

Tony Douglas, who is Edinburgh Napier University’s Director of the Edinburgh Institute of Sales and Chair of the Institute of Sales & Marketing Management (ISMM), said: “There is an industry-led need for sales and we’re hoping to encourage our students to leave Edinburgh Napier with the added advantage of having sales skills under their belts to help boost their employability and overall appeal to global employers.”

Craig Jackson, director of recruitment spin out Talented, which is part of the Edgar Stewart family, and who also sits on the ISMM board, said: “It was great to meet so many interesting and inspiring students. We were blown away by their talent for selling. Because the standard was so high, we found it really difficult to choose the winners!”

One of the students has been invited for a follow-up interview as part of the Santander Universities SME Internship programme, in which two graduates will spend three months at Edgar Stewart’s business incubator and start-up hub in Stockbridge.

Once in-post, the graduate recruits will be tasked with boosting client acquisition and helping to grow the business as part of Edgar Stewart’s ethos to inspire, challenge and innovate.
