Eleven Scottish companies on league table of fastest-growing international sales stars

Published this weekend, the seventh annual Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 league table ranks Britain’s mid-market private companies with the fastest-growing international sales.

The 11 companies headquartered in Scotland (compared to 16 last year) include two new entrants to the league table. Their international sales have grown by an average of 42% a year over two years to a total of £450m, and together they now employ 5,030 people.

Among the new entrants in Scotland is Moray-based Baxters. It has manufacturing sites in five locations worldwide, and its soups, canned meat, chutneys and condiments are sold in more than 30 countries. In 2014, the company acquired US military food firm Wornick for £87.4m, helping international sales more than double to £125.1m in 2015.

Another new entrant is AMG Group, based in Port Glasgow. The company owns outdoor equipment brands including Vango, and still makes the iconic orange Force Ten tents, used in camping expeditions for 50 years. It sells to Europe as well as South Korea and Australia, and exports reached £3.6m in 2014.

The companies in Scotland appear with businesses from around the UK, including women’s sportswear retailer Sweaty Betty, health and beauty products manufacturer Neal’s Yard Remedies, shoemaker Hotter, and sandwich shop chain Pret A Manger.

The league table reflects the importance of Europe to Britain’s mid-market exporters ahead of the UK’s EU referendum on 23 June. More than three quarters of the companies (166) sell to the continent, the most popular market, followed by North America (108) and Asia (88).

It is sponsored by HSBC and compiled by Fast Track, the Oxford-based research and networking events firm.

Amanda Murphy, UK head of corporate banking at HSBC, commented:

“The Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 is a great reflection of the value of building connections overseas. The world is getting smaller and for ambitious businesses, the opportunities to source goods and services and to grow organically via international trade, digitally or on the ground, are easier than ever. I’m delighted to see so many HSBC-backed mid-sized firms making such a strong impression on the world stage.”
