A major investment at the West Highland Hotel in Mallaig is set to raise standards, create new jobs and help it progress towards year-round opening.

Owners, Gavin and Sine Davis have secured a £95,000 investment from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) towards a £271,600 upgrade of the 40-bedroom hotel.

A new conservatory has improved the exterior and extended the dining area to accommodate both residents and non-residents. New disabled access and a ground floor guest room with private terrace have also been incorporated. As a result, eight full time equivalent jobs will be created.

The West Highland Hotel overlooks the Sound of Sleat to the islands of Skye, Rum and Eigg.

HIE supports account managed tourism businesses like the West Highland Hotel that create economic, social and environmental benefits in remote and fragile areas like Mallaig.

Elaine Jones from HIE said: “Creating these new jobs will contribute even more to the local economy every year and the project has added to the quality of local visitor facilities. This makes Mallaig a more attractive overall destination especially during the shoulder and winter months.

“By working towards making the hotel a year round operation, the owners will also provide improved continuity of employment and therefore help strengthen community resilience. Their ambitions for the hotel and local area are to be applauded.”

Since Gavin and Sine purchased the hotel, substantial investments have been made upgrading rooms, bathrooms, boilers, windows and equipment over the past six years. A new heating system is also planned.

Sine Davis said: “These improvements are geared towards making the hotel more appealing to visitors who have higher expectations in terms of quality and facilities.

“We are aiming to increase the volume of international and private customer reservations along with maintaining our ongoing strategy of targeting selective group bookings. This helps create a more relaxed and convivial atmosphere for everyone staying at the hotel and should convert to repeat future custom.”
