Costa has become the latest big name brand to open at Edinburgh’s £150 million New Waverley development, currently transforming the heart of the city’s historic Old Town.
The coffee firm has opened its latest branch on East Market Street, adjacent to the Whitbread Premier Inn Royal Mile hotel which opened in January 2016.
The coffee shop will provide more than 100 covers and employ 13 staff, serving what is anticipated to be a thriving catchment area as the £150 New Waverley development takes shape.
Already this year, two Whitbread Premier Inn hotels have opened their doors, with an Adagio Aparthotel overlooking a new public square scheduled to open by the end of the year, providing a combined total of almost 400 rooms.
The Waverley Arches, a converted row of 15 Victorian Arches, has also been launched in 2016, providing a thriving new leisure and retail quarter for the city, with 11 cafes, restaurants and independent retailers now operating underneath the arches.
Costa now operates over 2,000 coffee shops in the UK and more than 1,240 stores in 31 markets overseas. Welcoming the launch of the New Waverley Costa Coffee, Kerry Parkin, Costa’s Head of Communications and CSR said: “We are very excited about opening in this vibrant new part of the city centre and can’t wait to welcome our first customers.
“As with all of our new store openings we will do all that we can to integrate ourselves with the local community, getting involved with events, providing the store as a meeting place and helping with fundraising.”
Artisan Real Estate Investors, the developers behind New Waverley has also announced detailed plans for the next phase of development which includes around 220 residential units plus 100,000 sq. ft. of Grade A office space.
Artisan’s project Direct Clive Wilding added: “Costa Coffee is the biggest coffee shop name in the UK right now. To have a hugely popular brand like that in the heart of our development is yet another endorsement of the potential for New Waverley to build a thriving and sustainable destination right in the heart of the city centre, linking Waverley Station with the iconic Royal Mile.”
