Merlin ERD open US office in Houson, Texas

Perth based drilling experts Merlin ERD have announced the next phase of their growth plan with the opening of an office in Houston, Texas, USA.

Martyn Greensmith has been appointed to oversee the US venture with the support of the well-established Perth team.

Martyn, originally from Birmingham, has lived and worked in Houston for many years. Starting his career as a wireline engineer with Schlumberger then latterly Gyrodata where he was Vice President of Operations.

Martyn said “These are exciting times. Establishing the office in Houston will assist us to better serve our International clients opening up huge potential in the Americas and Gulf of Mexico. I relish the challenge of being part of the Merlin team and helping to develop this hugely successful business further”.

With numerous years’ experience in the oil and gas industry Merlin have positioned themselves as industry leader in Extended Reach Drilling (ERD) technologies, by combining the latest US and international innovations to open up new opportunities while driving down drilling costs.

Iain Hutchison, MD of Merlin described this venture as a major milestone for the company and the team. He added “It has been a long and at times difficult journey, especially through this downturn which has required an extraordinary effort to keep our world-beating business on track. Our pragmatic approach and independent status is well aligned with the US can-do spirit. With 90% of our business coming from overseas markets America was always the next big target for us”. They have already sold places on the first of their expert ERD operations training courses in Houston which runs 8-10 November 2016.

Over 8.4 million barrels of oil are produced a day in the USA and over 50% of the countries drilling rigs are based in the Texas geographical area, so the potential is enormous. Merlin have engineering staff on the team who have played a key part in delivering some record breaking wells in Sakhalin, California, Gulf of Mexico, Australia and the Middle East.
