New co-working concept launches in Edinburgh

An innovative new concept which will see unused space in restaurants and bars used as co-working spaces has launched in Edinburgh.

New Bloc, which was started to help freelancers and start-up companies find creative and affordable working spaces, has announced its first venue as The Refinery at St Andrew Square in Edinburgh.

Costing £59 a month, members who join New Bloc will get access to a working space, as well as unlimited refreshments, Wi-Fi and other amenities such as meeting spaces.

Established by entrepreneurs Jordan Kay and Michael Ford, New Bloc is looking to recruit more venues across the UK in the hope that more people will have access to flexible working environments at a low cost.

Jordan Kay, co-director of New Bloc, who also owns photo experience company Blushbooth, said:

“As someone who started their own business I know what it’s like to be constantly working from coffee shops, it can be really expensive as well as unproductive.

“We wanted to come up with a cheaper alternative of traditional office space for those who are perhaps first starting out and can’t afford it or for those who are not based in the same place all of the time.

“There are so many cool bars and restaurants in city centres across the UK so we thought it would be a great idea to see if these could be turned into creative co-working spaces during the day, and luckily The Refinery were all for it.

“We have had great feedback so far and are now hoping to expand across the UK so are keen to hear from any venues that might be interested in joining this exciting new revolution of co-working.”

New Bloc is offering a one week free trial at The Refinery at St Andrew Square and will be hosting a evening launch event on Thursday 21 September.

Ashley McCraw, sales and events manager at The Refinery at St Andrew Square, said:

“We are delighted to partner up with New Bloc and be a part of their new venture.

“They have a fantastic and unique idea that will work perfectly with our city centre venue.’’
