Aberdeen Heat & Power – The Story Continues

Speaker – Ian Booth

Aberdeen Heat & Power (AH&P) is a not for profit company set up through Aberdeen City Council (ACC) in 2002 to specifically tackle heating within multi storey blocks of flats in the city.  Up until then all 59 of the city’s blocks were electrically heated with either storage heaters or warm air heating.

It was estimated that about 70% of the residents were living in fuel poverty, with many properties under-heated, damp conditions leading to health problems etc.  A solution was needed that was cost effective, affordable and sustainable.  After an initial project of re-heating 4 multis at Stockethill, the success was realised and from there various other projects have been installed and expanded over the years.  Typically residents costs for heating could reduce by up to 50% (dependent on the quality of heating they were able to afford previously), and the carbon footprint was reduced by 40% as the electric heating systems were replaced by efficient combined heat and power (CHP) systems.

To date we now have 33 of the 59 blocks installed with new heating systems and linked directly to the CHP district heating networks.  In addition, another 7 stand-alone blocks have been converted with the same heating systems albeit from communal gas boiler systems, but these systems could be linked into the main networks should they extend to that location in the future.  In addition, we are now connected to 15 public buildings, providing cost and carbon savings for these installations.  In the next year we plan to connect a further 4 stand-alone blocks, and extend the network to two new housing developments and a community
