Chris Dunridge, The People Practice

Chris Dunridge of The People Practice

Name: Chris Dunridge

Company name: The People Practice

When did you start (with) the company?

I relaunched The People Practice in January 2014 after spending five years as head of HR at TAQA Bratani. Before that it traded from 1994 to 2008. When TAQA asked me to join them on a full time basis I mothballed the business for a few years but it was always my intention to start up again when I’d achieved what I set out to do at TAQA.

In 50 words or less what does your company do?

We provide a wide range of HR services to help companies from all sectors and of all sizes build their business success. In particular, using the expertise developed over the past five years, the company specialises in supporting mergers, acquisitions, divestments and other major change initiatives.

What part of the business do you enjoy best?

Meeting new people and building relationships has always been the most rewarding part of HR for me. However, as a consultant the variety of the work that we do is always stimulating. In addition, as a great deal of what we do is project based, I enjoy the challenge of a project, meeting a deadline and delivering positive results.

If you had to start again from scratch what would you do differently?

As I have just started again from scratch this is a difficult question to answer. I wish I had started to work on my web site copy earlier though as that has proved to be more difficult than I thought it would be.

What is unique about what your company does?

The People Practice is unique in specialising in the delivery of major organisational change projects. We are experienced in assisting overseas investors in setting up a business in the UK. We have an understanding of cultural differences and how to manage these and this is also an advantage in a global market place. An increasing number of overseas companies now want to establish a base in the North-east and we can help them do that.

Has there been a key moment or turning point?

Deciding to relaunch the business was a key point for me and the months of planning that followed were exciting if not a wee bit nerve-racking.

How do you intend to grow the company?

Slowly - I have a five year growth plan that includes growing to employing a maximum of five employees over that time. I have a network of associate consultants that can deal with the peaks and troughs of project-based assignments.

We will grow by developing great relationships with individuals and organisations, by being trusted and for delivering for our clients.

Do you have any non-executive directors, mentors or key advisors? Who are they?

I do not have any non-executive directors but my business advisor at Enterprise North East Trust has been invaluable. At the moment, as a start-up business I am listening to a great deal of advice.

What will the next 12 months hold?

A great deal of hard work, networking, promoting The People Practice and delivering a first class service for our clients.

If you were given £100,000 to invest in the company, how would you use it?

I would immediately employ my first employee to work on administration, social networking and promoting the business.

What’s the best part of running a business?

Meeting and working with an amazing variety of people. I have also been enormously encouraged by feedback and help from so many individuals and I also enjoy being my own boss - attempting to create the perfect work / life balance.

What do you do to relax?

I love spending time with my daughter, my flat-coated retriever and friends. Living in Aberdeenshire I really enjoy spending time in the countryside and truly believe that Scotland is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Recently I have enjoyed visits to Perthshire, Mull, Skye and my home island of Lewis.
