Geoff Feeney - Anartya

Your Name - Geoff Feeney
Company Name - Anartya

When did you start (with) the company?
I joined April/May time in 2005, about twelve months after the company was formed.

In 50 words or less what does your company do?

Our core business has always been conducting health and safety training. We also provide health and safety consultancy and more recently have become involved with environmental training.

What part of the business do you like best?
I really enjoy the training side of the business and the face to face contact with the delegates. As the company has grown I’ve become more involved with the day to day running of it and so the behind the scenes activities are now where my interest lies, perhaps even more so than the training. That said I still really enjoy running some of our core courses, particularly our route cause analysis and behavioural safety courses.

If you had to start again from scratch what would you do differently?
Interestingly, that is pretty much what we are in the process of doing at the moment, starting from scratch. The company started out with each of our existing contacts and gaining business through word of mouth which was fine to a point. In order to grow, we are now concentrating on having a more focussed approach and exploiting our markets a lot more than we have in the past.

What is unique about what the company does?
It has to be the quality of our training courses. I tend to say that we are not a typical ‘tick box’ organisation – we really want to make sure that our delegates go away feeling confident and enthused about what they have been learning.

Has there been a key moment or turning point?

Yes, now. Our training was always focussed on health and safety until recently when we were approached by one of our clients to provide an environmental course. We got in touch with someone we knew in the environmental side of things at PSN as it was then (now Woodgroup PSN) and from there developed the course. The course subsequently got tremendous support from the industry players and since then it has really taken off.

How do you intend to grow the company?

As I mentioned earlier, we have a proper focus in place now for growth. We are working with a local PR company to get our name out there and build the Anartya brand. We are also fortunate to receive financial support from Enterprise Scotland in order to fund the Marketing Company we are working with on helping us build a workable strategy. We are just about to employ two new members of staff and have recently implemented a change of management in the company with myself being appointed as Managing Director.

Do you have any non-executive directors, mentors or key advisors? Who are they?
We have a range of consultants who work for us in their specialist fields and who are able to provide us with advice on variety of issues. We are also in the Scottish enterprise pipeline and so are able to tap into their consultants as and when we need to.

What will the next 12 months hold?

A lot of work! There will be a lot more involvement from those at director level in taking the company forward. We will be finalising our business plans along with our marketing strategy as without these in place we won’t be able to grow. We will be re-investing much of our profits in order to enhance the capabilities of Anartya and to be where we want to be which is the number one provider of HS&E training courses.

If you were given £100,000 to invest in the company, how would you use it?

No question – I would invest it towards having our own training facility.

What's the best part of running a business?

For me personally and at my age, it is very satisfying to be able to use the knowledge and experience I have gained over the last 35 years to try and push forward a training organisation specifically but not necessarily limited to the oil and gas industry.

What do you do to relax?
Where I live pretty much dictates what I do in my spare time. I have lived in Crathie on Royal Deeside for last 7 years and have spent much of my time renovating the old ruin I bought. I’ve got an acre of garden as well so have spent much of my time outside landscaping and planting. I do prefer being outdoors and often spend time walking in the hills or working on The Balmoral and surrounding Estates with my Black Labrador, beating and picking up for the local shoot.
