Charlie Innes - Innes Associates

Your Name - Charlie Innes
Company Name - Innes Associates

When did you start (with) the company?
I founded Innes Associates in January 2003, having spent 34 years working in the field of advertising, marketing and promotion in Aberdeen. I am therefore delighted to be celebrating the company's tenth anniversary this year. The past decade has flown by - there hasn't been a dull moment!

In 50 words or less what does your company do?

Innes Associates works with clients to deliver their communications needs. Our services span advertising, marketing and public relations (PR). Many of our clients treat us as their own 'communications department', however we also work with clients on a project by project basis, helping out with ad hoc requirements.

What part of the business do you like best?
Seeing a campaign come to life is extremely rewarding, whether it is spotting a client's advertisement on the back of the bus on the commute to work or opening the morning newspaper to discover that one of our press releases has been used. Seeing work evolve from a design idea through to an end product, especially printwork, is very satisfying and rewarding.

If you had to start again from scratch what would you do differently?
I wouldn't change much but would have taken the initiative to set up my own business a lot earlier in life.

What is unique about what the company does?
We only employ experienced people with a sound pedigree, so our clients are always in a safe pair of hands. It may not be deemed unique but we really become a part of the organisations we work with, so that we fully understand their goals and can help them to achieve them.

Has there been a key moment or turning point?

I guess surviving through difficult recessionary times in 2009/2010 was a key turning point and business has flourished ever since.

How do you intend to grow the company?

By increasing the staff level to six and the client portfolio by 20-30%.

Do you have any non-executive directors, mentors or key advisors? Who are they?
When I started on my own in 2013 I was helped by a longtime friend who is a non-exec director. I also owe a great deal of thanks to Ian Ord and Cliff Collier of Fifth Ring who supported me immensely from the outset, as did their whole team. I can't thank them enough for their generosity.

What will the next 12 months hold?

Our ten year anniversary is an exciting year for us - and we look forward to sharing the event in various ways with both existing and new clients. Technological innovation means that there are lots of new developments and opportunities for us to explore with our clients and I'm sure we'll have fun along the way. So much has changed in the last ten years.

If you were given £100,000 to invest in the company, how would you use it?

Recruit the additional team members and upgrade hardware and software to enable us to provide an even better service to clients.

What's the best part of running a business?

The majority of our business has come via word of mouth and there's nothing better than a potential new client telling you that you come recommended.

And of course I don't need to ask anyone's permission to go and play golf!

What do you do to relax?
Walking our black labrador (Neave), playing golf, gardening and spending lots of time with my family.
