Campbeltown business wants to clean up

Amy McIntosh

A young entrepreneur has set up her own cleaning company and has been so overwhelmed by the response; she is hopeful that she will soon be taking on staff.

Amy McIntosh, 21, from Campbeltown, always desired to be her own boss and after receiving support from Argyll and Bute Council’s Business Gateway, she set up her own business Maid to Shine.

Amy said: “Apart from doing Business Management at Higher level at school, I didn’t have the confidence or knowledge to start a business. I met with a Business Gateway adviser, Donald Melville, who was very friendly and helpful. Not only did he support and advise me on the basics such as bookkeeping and paying tax, but when I told him my business was growing, Donald gave me all the relevant information and advice about the steps I need to undertake in order to employ staff.

“The support I received from Business Gateway and the advice I continue to get, has put me on the right path and I’m confident the business will have a successful future.”

Despite initial reservations that people would think her too young or inexperienced, Amy is delighted with the response her business has had, and in order to cope with demand she will soon be looking to expand by employing local people.

Amy added: “I really didn’t expect to be doing this well so soon but from the beginning I’ve received positive feedback and although I was unsure of how much work I would get, word got round very quickly, and being a small town, people were soon approaching me.”

Donald Melville, Business Adviser, Business Gateway said: “Amy proves that age is no barrier when it comes to enterprise. Amy has taken on board everything we have helped her with from learning about national insurance, to creating and using a business plan. Now, we are assisting Amy as she begins to look at becoming an employer.”
