Investors in Young People award for Shaw Trust Scotland

The Shaw Trust Scotland has been presented with its Investors in Young People award, acknowledging its efforts in transforming young people’s employment prospects.

The employment, learning and skills charity was awarded the IIYP accreditation in May, and given the award this week by Youth Employment Minister Annabelle Ewing.

Shaw Trust is the largest third sector contractor for Department for Work and Pensions, and helps over 50,000 people across the UK per year.

Minister for Youth and Women’s Employment, Annabelle Ewing, said: “The Scottish Government recognises the key role of Scotland’s Young workforce in delivering sustainable economic growth and we are committed to raising aspiration and employment opportunities for our young people across Scotland.

“I am delighted to present the Shaw Trust Scotland with their Investors In Young People award. It is a real credit to all of their hard work and efforts in making sure that our young people have the best opportunities while in employment. Their mentoring scheme and management of younger employees has rightly been rated as excellent and should serve as an example of best practice for other employers across Scotland.

“We want to make sure that the next generation of Scots have every encouragement, support and advice they need when entering the employment market so that we can continue to tackle youth unemployment.”

Tanya Gilchrist, Head of Operations for Shaw Trust Scotland, added: “Shaw Trust Scotland is proud to be awarded the Investors in Young People. We offer a clear pathway of support which includes training opportunities and mentoring for our younger employees. We would encourage more employers to become accredited and put in place support that builds up young people's skills so that youth unemployment continues to fall in Scotland.

“Although youth unemployment is down, overall figures continue to increase which underlines the importance of employment support services. Shaw Trust Scotland continues to draw on its experience as an employment support provider to tackle unemployment. We have helped over 3,000 disabled people into work. Shaw Trust Scotland is keen to work with the Scottish Government to tackle unemployment across all age groups and ability.”
