Insurance industry chief joins Scottish Business Resilience Centre

The Scottish Government and Police Scotland’s business resilience delivery arm has appointed the current head of customer risk management at AXA as a non-executive director.

Douglas Barnett joins the Scottish Business Resilience Centre (SBRC) as it aims to boost its relationship with the insurance sector and help it to offer expert advice on risk to businesses in Scotland.

Douglas has 30 years’ experience in the insurance sector, and has spent the last 15 at AXA, the world’s largest insurance broker. During this time, he has worked on projects across Europe, and is currently part of the firm’s Global Loss Prevention Board.

He said: “I was enthusiastic about joining the SBRC due to the growing reach it has and its commitment to impact positively on Scottish businesses.

“Having worked with the SBRC as a customer and then recommending its services to our own clients, I am very aware of its strengths and I’m excited to be able to contribute to its ongoing success.

“I hope I am able to bring some of my industry knowledge, as insurance has such an important role to play in business resilience. It is essential that small businesses fully understand risk to their business, to limit the impact of scenarios which could cause a business to lose vital staff or prevent potential customers getting through the door.”

Director of the SBRC, Mandy Haeburn-Little, added: “We are delighted to have someone with Douglas’ expertise and reputation to join us as a non-executive Director.

“Douglas’ knowledge and experience will help us greatly in many different areas - in particular we are all keen to understand how we can forge much closer links with the insurance sector and what small businesses can do to ensure they receive the right level of insurance and that they have all the critical areas of their business covered.”
